"Ooops! Are You About To Miss The Tax Deadline?"
By Peg Bastin
Are you running late in filing your taxes? So are more
than 8.5 million taxpayers in America. What can you do?
You can file an IRS Form 4868 before April 15, 2004 to
obtain an Automatic Extension of Time to File. This will
give you an extra 4 months (until August 15) to file your
return to avoid the late filing penalty, which is 5% per
month of the unpaid tax.
If you have special circumstances, such as a hardship, and
are unable to file by August 15, you can complete Form 2688
and request an extra two month extension. This would give
you til October 15, 2004 to file your return. This request
for an extra extension is NOT automatic like the first
extension. If the IRS allows you this additional time to
file, you will not have a penalty for late payment of tax
if you pay the balance of your tax when you file your tax
return by October 15, provided 90% of your total tax was
paid by April 15.
You MUST file Form 2688 with the IRS by August 15 to
request the extra extension. You'll need to file this form
several weeks before this deadline, to give the IRS time
to respond to you before August 15.
You can find this form on the Internet. Go to
http://www.irs.gov and
click on Forms and Instructions,
and then in the box labeled "Search for Forms and
Publications," type in Form 2688. On the page you will be
taken to, double-click on the top item in the list to be
able to download Form 2688 that you can fill out on your
computer and print out for mailing to the IRS. This is in
pdf format, so you will need Adobe Acrobat to be able to
view it.
The IRS will send you written notification to let you know
if your request is granted. You do NOT want to miss this
deadline, even if you didn't "officially" ask the IRS for
deadline extensions. If you are late it would be a good
idea to consult with a professional home-business tax
specialist to help you with this "IRS dilemma."
